The city and region of Covilhã
The city of Covilhã, Portugal, where the 4th Conference will take place is a medium size city considering the dimension of urban centres in Portugal, located in the central countryside, about 200 kms from the seaside. The city is located at the base of the highest continental mountain of Portugal, Serra da Estrela, in the Centre Region. The only mountain range where there is a season of winter propitious for winter sports like ski and snowboard. It is connected by two highways, to the north of Portugal by the A25, and centre and south by the A23. The two main Portuguese cities, Lisbon and Oporto, are 300 and 250 km away, respectively. The city is the heir of a very rich and interesting historical heritage related to the wool industry which was established here several hundred years ago. Also famous is the creamy Serra da Estrela cheese made from the sheep milk raised on the slopes of the mountain range.
